I hope this message finds all of you staying safe and healthy during this unprecedented time in education and life in general. I wanted to update you on a few things we will be doing moving forward during the most recent school closure. As some of you may already know, the governor released information late Monday shutting down all schools until May 1st . With this new closure order, we want to keep you up to date of various information for the next month. This information can also be found at our website, www.meigslocal.org. We will have a new section there called distance online enrichment. This section will have all educational information and updates from now until the May 1 st closure order. In addition, each building should have hard copies of this same online information placed in containers outside of the buildings. Hopefully, this will assist if you cannot print the enrichment activities from home. We would ask as your child completes these activities, to please hold on to the work until further notice.
I also want to mention that we will have Wi-Fi hotspots outside of each of our buildings. There will be a map posted on the website and district Facebook page showing where these locations are at each building. This service will be accessible under Meigs public Wi-Fi if you need online access. In addition, we are continuing to do a 5-day meal distribution from both the elementary and middle school every Wednesday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. If you need this service, meals are prepared, and you can drive through to pick them up. If you do not need this service, please opt out from the instructions on the website or at the Meigs local food service Facebook page.
I want to finish by saying all our staff truly does miss our students. Some of them may have already contacted students or will be in the coming days, to just to see how you're doing. We hope that you and your family continue to stay safe and healthy during this unfortunate time. Please contact us with any questions you may have thank you again for your understanding and patience.

There will be an extension of the K-12 order closing school buildings through Friday, May 1, 2020. The original order was only in effect for 3 weeks. The Governor’s office will again reevaluate the order once we get closer to May 1, 2020.
Updated at 11:00AM March 13th, 2020
This is an update to yesterday’s letter sent home with your child and posted on the website. As most of you know, Governor DeWine issued 3-week shutdown for ALL K-12 SCHOOLS in the state of Ohio beginning the end of the day, Monday, March 16th and ending the closure through Friday, April 3, 2020. As an important note to the order, Meigs Local School District, along with Eastern and Southern Local, will begin this shutdown period beginning the Morning of March 16. Again, the Meigs Local School District will be closed through Friday, April 3, 2020.
In addition to schools being closed, there will be no practices, meetings, activities or events between now and April 3, 2020 unless otherwise noted. Given the extended time period students will not be in school, the Board of Education and I will be reviewing all other field trips or scheduled events beyond this three-week period and possibly imposing additional cancellations if necessary.
The decision to close the schools by Governor DeWine and ODH is based on the principle of social distancing. For the general public, this means our buildings will be closed during this time to any use by outside groups. This would include any organizations, community programs, or other parties that routinely use our facilities. This directive is in place until further notice or additional guidance by ODH and the Governor’s Office. Any previously approved building use between now and April 3 is officially negated.
Due to contractual obligations related to calamity days, teachers and other employees will not be working next week. The week of March 16-20 will be a total shutdown. As a result, we will be in planning the week of March 23 with preparation on how to do food deliveries and determining best practices to deliver instruction to our students and at what extent possible. Your child may be bringing home instructional materials today. We also plan to have our phone lines open and staff in all buildings the second week. All scenarios and plans to deliver academic work to our students via website, class apps, and other electronic methods of delivery will be attempted. Updates and information will be posted via the webpage at www.meigslocal.org and through the All Call systems. Work for students though Blizzard bags will be at the following link http://bit.ly/meigs-blizzard-bags.
I know that there will be many questions. Unfortunately, at this moment I do not have all the answers
finalized. As decisions are made and information becomes available, I will communicate to our families. Please understand this is an unprecedented time in our educational world. Please be patient and flexible as we navigate through this.
Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we work through the specific details of this closure.

Dear Parents and Guardians:
I am sending you information regarding the Novel Coronavirus, COVID-19. As many of you are aware by now, the Novel Coronavirus is a virus which can infect the respiratory tract and spread similarly to cold viruses. I want to reiterate the health and safety of our staff, students, and school community is of the utmost importance to us at Meigs Local.
As you may be aware, the CDC states that more cases of COVID-19 are likely to increase in the coming days, including more cases in Ohio. Currently, our general area and county have no confirmed cases. As a result, we would like to communicate some important information to all parents and families.
The Ohio Department of Health and Governor’s Office are working closely with our county health department to monitor the situation closely. In addition, all parties are continually preparing guidance documents to follow and share for effectively responding to any additional cases that may be identified in the State and more importantly, our county.
Currently, we are following the advice and guidance set forth by Governor DeWine’s office, Center for Disease Control (CDC), Ohio Department of Health, and local health officials. Governor DeWine recently issued the following statements that impact our school community. K-12 Schools: DeWine is not currently recommending the closure of elementary, middle, and high schools; however, school administrators should begin planning for that possibility. Parents should also begin planning for the potential that they may need to stay home with their children or find alternate childcare solutions.
Athletics: DeWine has recommended that all indoor high school, college, and professional sports competitions be held without spectators. He asks that events take place only with athletes, parents, sporting officials, and media. Right now, outdoor sporting events can continue as planned.
General Large Gatherings: Generally, the governor recommends that organizers of any events involving a large gathering of individuals in close proximity be cancelled or postponed, such as parades.
Our school district has policies in place to guide us through these types of situations and mandate we comply with all regulations of the Governor’s Office, Ohio Department of Health, Ohio Department of Education, as well as the County Health Department. Our contingency plan at present and if/when needed, would implement the possible shutdown with the required 14-day quarantine period recommended by the CDC. For now, the general strategy during a possible shutdown, would include various forms of web based, online, or delivered instructional materials. In addition, we will still make every effort to deliver meals to various locations in the county for pick-up, much like our summer meal program, to assist with the nutritional needs of our students. These plans, any changes, and updates of information would be circulated and shared through our website and All Call system.
According to the CDC and many health officials, it is recommended that individuals follow these public health guidelines, not just for COVID-19, but also to prevent the spread of influenza. Please reiterate these things to your child and we will assist in providing the same preventative educational strategies in our buildings and classrooms.
- Prevent the spread of germs by covering coughs and sneezes.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
- Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing. If you use a tissue, throw it in the trash.
- Routinely clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
- Stay home if you are sick and avoid sick people.
- Ohio Department of Health Link, https://coronavirus.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/covid-19/
- Review and follow the CDC travel advisory, https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/warning/novel-coronavirus-china when planning travel. If you or a family member becomes ill after returning home to the United States, call a healthcare provider.
- For more information visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention FAQ on Coronavirus website at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html
We are currently doing as much as possible to disinfect, clean, and ensure our buildings stay hygienic. In addition, we are working closely and communicating with the other school districts in our county and area. Please understand that we will follow and comply with the guidance and directives set forth by the Governor’s office and all Departments of Health as mentioned earlier and we will prepare for any changes as the situation evolves.
