As many of you know, we are closing in on the opening of the new school year. The district has had representatives from both unions, administration, and health department assist in planning at various times throughout June and July. Obviously, planning for a potential opening during these times is challenging and difficult to meet the needs, desires, or wants of every party. This is especially true in regards to the safety of students and staff while still trying to meet the educational and emotional needs of our students. In mid-June, parent/guardian and staff surveys were sent to collect information pertaining to the restart of the 20-21 school year. Collection of this data was done to help provide guidance and assistance for decision making. Like many things, everyone has an opinion or idea and the challenge for the committees and the board was evaluating the data to assist in planning for what parents and staff would like to see for the upcoming year. The survey data had many good data points, but the main items used in assisting us was the overall respondent percentage regarding the Blended and Remote Models as we developed our plans.
At the board meeting last night, the board voted on a Blended and Remote Model that hopefully fits the needs of the parents and staff according to the data. The Blended Model is a 3/2 (day) model that would allow parents choosing the Blended Model to send students Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday for in person instruction. Thursday and Friday, those students would be out. This would allow staff additional time for those two days and the Remote student planning. Again, students selecting the Remote Model will follow that model as long as they like. If they would decide to change to the Blended Model, it would have to be after the trimester/9 weeks ends. Students on the Blended Model will commit to that model but could come off for the Remote option at any time. If numbers change dramatically in one Model or the other, we will revaluate the current plans as a whole. If changes occur, the principals will share the data for variations and adjustments as needed.
It is apparent there is no “best plan” to be used. I believe the current plans recognize that we may be required to deliver education in a variety of ways and settings at different times throughout the school year. Now more than ever, we will have to work together to meet the needs and welfares of our students. Building principals, supervisors, and the union leaders will be meeting to discuss various challenges and questions as we proceed and delivering the best answers possible to each question and situation. In closing, we will continue to monitor and watch districts around us that start earlier than we do.
I ask that you review and share this plan with all those involved in the education of your child. We will be releasing a comittment form in next day to collect your decision on how your child(ren) will be attending school in the fall. We request that ALL MLSD families respond to this form.
